As an evolutionary ecologist, I am broadly interested in the mechanisms that generate and maintain biodiversity — how species adapt, persist, and diversify in the face of environmental change. Much of my work centers on classic eco-evolutionary questions: what determines a species’ capacity to adapt, why some lineages diversify while others stagnate, and how these processes play out across space and time. I use mountain ecosystems, and disturbances like climate change and wildfire, as a natural laboratory for testing these topics, as they impose strong and often rapid selective pressures on the species living there. By combining field ecology, modeling, and evolutionary theory, I investigate how biotic and abiotic factors interact to shape traits, distributions, and evolutionary trajectories, and what the resulting variation among species reveals about the broader processes driving diversification.
